This data is based on US sales and doesn’t take into account the console’s global reach. Still, it’s an impressive achievement considering the popularity of the Xbox’s competition. NPD states that despite the strong hardware sales in dollars for Xbox in March, the Nintendo Switch is still the number one console in terms of units sold. But given the length of time the Switch has been out compared to the Xbox Series X|S and PS5, that shouldn’t be surprising.

Xbox hardware sales were number one in both March and Q1 2022

Xbox didn’t just have its best March sales performance in 11 years. It also had the best hardware sales performance in dollars for the first quarter of 2022. Again, something that shouldn’t be surprising if you’ve been following the console market. Both the PS5 and PS5 Digital continue to be a challenge to find. And while the Series X doesn’t fare much better, Microsoft still has the Series S. Which is much easier to buy and has been more readily available than its counterpart. But while Xbox was having its best March dollar sales performance since 2011, hardware sales as a whole in the US have decreased since the same time in 2021. Dropping 24% to a total of $515 million. First quarter hardware sales as a whole are also down compared to 2021. Dropping to $1.2 billion, which is a 15% decline over last year. In terms of software, Elden Ring is once again the best-selling game of the month. NPD states that its dollar sales growth compared to its launch in February was doubled. Ranking as the number one game for dollar sales across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Gran Turismo 7 meanwhile ranked as the number two best-selling game in terms of sales for March. While also setting a record for dollar sales for the franchise during the launch month of any Gran Turismo title.
