For clarity, the tabs appear to work almost identically to how tabs in a browser window work, as shown in the images below. In effect, letting users have multiple folders or other system locations open in a single window. Complete with the ability to simply tap a tab to quickly navigate to frequently accessed locations.
What else is coming to Windows 11 File Explorer, aside from tabs?
Microsoft will also be looking to add a homepage for File Explorer. The feature will house Quick Access folders and recent documents. Those are fairly straightforward, as similar features are already present in File Explorer. So, primarily, the new homepage will serve as a central hub for those features. But the updated homepage will also showcase a brand new “Favorites” access option as well. With the Favorites option in place, users will be able to right-click or long-press files and folders. Then they’ll be able to select “Add to favorites” for quick access from the File Explorer homepage. The files and folders will be pinned directly to the home page for easier access without digging. Finally, Microsoft is updating dialog and options for sharing files. Including options to share with apps such as Teams, Outlook, or OneDrive. Making the file-sharing mechanism potentially work a lot more like Android. With an additional option to allow users to simply select from recent contacts. Potentially adding up to a lot of time saved for users who are accessing File Explorer for work. All of the new changes will arrive via a monthly update for Windows 11. However, Microsoft hasn’t provided clarification as to exactly when they will launch.
