MMOs are perfect examples of this. So, games like Final Fantasy XIV and World Of Warcraft are live service games. Bungie’s Destiny 2 is another live service game, and is a big reason for Sony’s decision to acquire the studio and add it to its list of studios that have been purchased all throughout last year.

Sony plans to launch 10 new live service games

Since Destiny 2 is already a launched title, it’s not going to be one of Sony’s 10 new releases. It is however part of the plan to launch those new titles in a roundabout way. Sony wants to move big into the live service space. And acquiring Bungie allows it to have the talent that would be able to help with those goals. Bungie is also developing at least one new live service IP. And that will be one of Sony’s 10 planned releases by March of 2026. Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki said during the earnings call that “through close collaboration between Bungie and PlayStation Studios we aim to launch more than 10 live service games by the fiscal year ending in March 2026.” 10 games in four years is a big play and acquiring Bungie is a bold move to make that happen. But, while 10 games in four years is ambitious, it might not be entirely impossible for Sony to do it. Three of Sony’s other first-party studios are reportedly working on or staffing for live service games. Including Naughty Dog, Guerilla, and PlayStation’s London Studio. But, even if all three of those studios manage to crank out a live service title by March 2026, that still only accounts for 4 out of the 10 titles if you include Bungie’s upcoming game codenamed ‘Matter.’ So where are the other 6 going to come from? Keep in mind that Sony still plans to buy up more studios. Ones that will likely factor into its plans for additional live service titles.
