Earlier this year, Microsoft shocked the gaming world when it announced that it acquired Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion. This move will pluck several gaming franchises off of the Playstation store, unfortunately. Almost immediately after we got that news, Sony announced that it has purchased Bungie.
Now, Sony’s acquisition of Bungie is now complete
Large billion-dollar acquisitions like these take time to reach completion. While Microsoft made the move to acquire Activision Blizzard, the company is still awaiting approval from the American government. Also, even the UK is looking into this deal. So, whether Microsoft can keep its new toy is still up in the air. That being said, Sony also had to wait for its acquisition to be complete; and now, it is. Bungie just came out and posted a tweet (via Engadget) confirming that the $3.6 billion transaction is now complete. “We are proud to officially join the incredible team at PlayStation.” The company capped off the tweet with the quote Per Audacia ad Astra! “Through boldness to the stars”.
So, what does this mean?
Since Sony owns Bungie, this could mean that the ever-popular Destiny franchise won’t be available for Xbox consoles anymore. If so, this will be like a punch back at Microsoft. The Activision Blizzard acquisition means that franchises like Call of Duty, Overwatch, and others won’t be accessible on Playstation consoles. Not only that, but we’re not sure if Sony will commission the company to make any new first-party properties. Right now, the company is working on a Destiny App with a company called NetEase. We don’t know if that will be affected in any way. We’ll need to wait on further details so we can know what Sony intends to do with Bungie by its side.
