According to the report, Samsung shipped 22.8 million Exynos processors between April to June this year. The figure may not appear big when you see that nearly 300 million smartphones were sold globally during that period. But Exynos chipsets have never been the chart-toppers like the Korean firm’s smartphones. It had only shipped 14.9 million units in the previous three months. So a surge of 53 percent isn’t small. What makes it an even bigger win for Samsung is that none of the top three vendors saw growth in shipment in Q2 2022, let alone match the Korean firm’s growth rate. Market leader MediaTek shipped 100.1 million smartphone processors, down 9.6 percent from 110.7 million units in the previous quarter. Qualcomm also suffered a four percent decline in chipset shipments, reporting a shipment volume of 64 million units against 66.7 million units in the first quarter. Apple shipped 48.9 million Bionic processors this past quarter, which is a decline of 13.3 percent from 56.4 million units three months before. This helped Samsung increase its market share. Exynos processors accounted for 7.8 percent of the market in Q2 2022, up from 4.8 percent in the previous quarter. MediaTek (34.1 percent), Snapdragon (21.8 percent), Apple (16.6 percent), and Unisoc (9.0 percent) are the four brands above it.
Exynos processors captured more market in the low and mid segments in Q2 2022
Samsung has faced a lot of criticism from consumers for the poor performance of flagship Exynos processors over the past few years. The situation has gotten so worse that the company is using lesser in-house chipsets in its phones. The Galaxy S22 series used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors in several markets. Reports are that the Galaxy S23 series will completely ditch the Exynos lineup and will be powered by Snapdragon globally. However, low and mid-tier Exynos processors are still very much competent and Samsung continues to use them in its products. The Galaxy A33 5G and Galaxy A53 5G, which are usually its best-selling mid-range phones, feature the Exynos 1080. The Galaxy A13 budget handset, meanwhile, debuted with the Exynos 850 chipset. These phones sell in high numbers and that is what drove the shipment volume of Exynos processors in Q2 2022. Hopefully, Samsung will address the issues with its flagship processors soon and come back stronger in the premium segment too.
