Leaker Snoopy is claiming that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will receive four major Android OS updates and an additional year of security updates. We already know that the phones will arrive with Android 12 out of the box. So Google will be pushing Android 13, 14, 15, and 16 to the two Pixels in the coming years. Google currently offers three generations of Android updates to its Pixel lineup. Samsung also promised the same generosity to its Galaxy S, Galaxy Note, and Galaxy Z series flagships as well as some lower-cost Galaxy A models. A few more Android OEMs, including OnePlus and Xiaomi, have since followed suit, though most of them are only promising three major Android OS updates to their latest and/or upcoming flagship models. In the meantime, Google has further raised the bar for Android OEMs. It’s no small feat when you imagine that the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will launch later this month and receive software updates at least through October 2026. That said, it’s not a groundbreaking promise though. Apple already pushes 5-6 major iOS updates to all of its iPhone models. But things are now looking much better in the Android space as well.
Pixel 6 series launches later this month
After partly announcing the Pixel 6 duo earlier in August, Google last week confirmed that the new phones will officially break cover on October 19th. But as said earlier, the devices have been subject to so many leaks over the past few weeks that there’s hardly anything left to the imagination. For the most part, the Pixel lineup has been an upper-mid-range offering rather than true blue flagships. That’s seemingly changing this year. The Pixel 6 series is going to be a huge leap forward for Google’s smartphone lineup. The company finally appears to be taking the smartphone business seriously. Leaked specifications suggest that both Pixel 6 and 6 Pro can go head-to-head with flagship offerings from other Android OEMs. Extended software support could give Google an upper hand in this fight. All eyes are now on the October 19 launch event.
