And with GeForce NOW‘s growing popularity (especially with Stadia shutting down early next year), it’s no surprise that NVIDIA wants to keep the SHIELD updated as long as it can. The update this time around is by no means gigantic but it does usher in some meaningful features. Ones which we simply consider quality of life enhancements that aren’t groundbreaking, but they do improve the user experience all the same.
NVIDIA adds new power feature to the SHIELD with version 9.1.1
NVIDIA is making it easier than ever to access the content on your SHIELD. With the newest update, it’s now possible to wake your SHIELD device by switching to the input on your TV that the device is plugged into. If you have it plugged into the HDMI 2 slot for example. All you need to do is change the TV to that input. And if the SHIELD isn’t already on, this action will wake it up. Additionally, version 9.1.1 also adds a developer option to force Dolby Vision low latency. Some Philips TVs weren’t properly detecting Dolby Vision. This option is supposed to help fix that. There’s also now a developer option to improve HDMI-CEC volume control. This enhancement is specifically for AVR and soundbars. Developer options have been “re-organized and generally cleaned up” as well. Aside from these enhancements, the rest of the update is bug fixes. This update seems to have fixed the audio issues with Dolby Audio Processing. There’s a handful of video fixes too. One notable bug revolved around external storage. If you had external storage connected to the SHIELD, there was a chance you couldn’t play protected content. NVIDIA says this update clears that problem up.
