While the idea of a Harry Potter augmented reality game from Niantic was surely exciting for a large group of people, the game undoubtedly failed to capture the magic. Even doing so was a tall order when it had such a tough act to follow. Pokémon GO was by all means Niantic’s biggest success thus far. And for a time was one of the most popular mobile games on the planet let alone just in its own library of games. Harry Potter is a massive franchise, and popular to boot. But it’s not Pokémon massive, making HPWU seem a little more like a niche game title. So what’s to become of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite? Niantic has cast the killing curse on it.

Niantic will shut down Harry Potter: Wizards Unite early next year

The company says it will be shutting down the game in the beginning of next year. Specifically on January 31 of 2022. That means you still have a few months to enjoy what’s left of it before you’ll have to say goodbye yourself. Worth noting is that Niantic isn’t just going to leave things as they are today. Abruptly turning the lights off and walking out of the room forever. It’s actually working on concluding the story of the game, much in the way you would conclude the story of a movie or book. So if you still play, you may want to continue right up until the end. As that should provide some proper closure to the magical adventure you’ve been on these past few years. Niantic is calling this a finale, so it’s probably not something you want to miss. That is if you enjoyed the game in any respect. Following the shut down, Niantic has at least one other game in the works based on the Transformers franchise. And it just recently launched Pikmin Bloom alongside Nintendo.
