What began as an extremely limited test with just ten creators has now expanded to “tens of thousands” of creators across the US, Mosseri said. Based on feedback from those creators, Instagram is adding a bunch of new features to subscriptions. Firstly, we have Subscriber Chats that let creators interact directly with their fans on the app. Instagram will allow you to create groups with up to 30 subscribers at a time. The groups can be created directly from your inbox and will be powered by Messenger. Subscriber Chats will end automatically after 24 hours, Meta said in a separate newsroom post. Fans will be able to join the subscriber-only chats from a new “join chat” sticker in Stories. Instagram Subscriptions now also cover feed posts, including Reels. During the initial testing period, subscribers only got access to exclusive stories, live streams, and badges. Creators couldn’t post subscriber-only photos, videos, or Reels. That ability is finally coming to the platform. Mosseri says this was one of the most requested features by creators. Last but not least, Instagram is rolling out a new tab on your profile page to house all things Subscriptions. Called Subscriber Home, this is where all the exclusive photos, videos, and Reels will reside, hidden from non-subscribers. As soon as someone buys a subscription to your account, the world of exclusive content will open up to them.
Instagram will expand Subscriptions to more regions in the future
As of now, Instagram Subscriptions are only available to users in the US. But Mosseri said the company aims to become the “best place online for creators to make a living” and for that, global availability is crucial. To that end, the Meta-owned social media biggie plans to expand Subscriptions to more regions in the future. Unfortunately, there’s no ETA regarding when that might happen. During the testing phase, Instagram is letting creators charge their subscribers anything between $0.99 to $99.99 per month for exclusive content. Moreover, it doesn’t take any commission from Subscriptions. The company has assured that this policy will be in place at least until 2023. But as Subscriptions become widely available, things may change. We will let you know when Instagram shares more updates on Subscriptions.
