Other ISPs are typically around $70 for any decent speeds. AT&T does have cheaper plans that are around $50, but they are also limited to 100Mbps, and since its ADSL, it’s likely that you’ll never see 100Mbps. With T-Mobile, speeds are likely going to be different throughout the day, but since it’s not using mmWave for 5G Home Internet (yet), the wind won’t really bother it. But speeds can still vary, as they do with our phones when we do speed tests on 4G and 5G networks. So here’s how you can try out the T-Mobile 5G Home Internet for free, and other information you may need before you make the jump.
What kind of speeds can I get?
The speeds from T-Mobile aren’t as high as Verizon’s, but they are more stable. T-Mobile 5G Home Internet speeds range from 33-182Mbps. Not the fastest internet speeds around, but a good option if you live somewhere that doesn’t have fast fiber connections, like gigabit fiber. Verizon touts that it can get up to 900Mbps over 5G, but that’s with mmWave so it’s very unlikely that you’ll see anywhere near that. Especially on a windy day. The downside with cellular-based internet is that it will depend on your signal. If you live near a tower, than you’re going to get some great speeds. But if the tower is a few miles away, and the router is not near a window, then you won’t get all that great of a connection, unfortunately. What’s also great with T-Mobile 5G Home Internet (as well as Verizon 5G Home Internet) is that there’s no data cap. So that’s $50 per month, and you’re getting no data cap either. Which means you can use a terabyte or more of data. Though with those speeds, you likely wouldn’t use that much. Cellular-based internet may not be the best for everyone, especially with the slower and more inconsistent speeds. For someone working from home that always needs internet, you may want to look elsewhere, unless T-Mobile 5G Home Internet is your only option.
Does T-Mobile offer a free trial?
Yes, they do. That’s how you’ll get to try it for free. T-Mobile 5G Home Internet is available with a 15-day free trial. That’s not super long, and you will still need to pay for your first month up-front. But it’s a good way to check out the service before committing and ditching your current ISP. Since there’s no wiring that needs to be done, it’s super simple to set up and to cancel T-Mobile 5G Home Internet. T-Mobile will also pay up to $500 in early termination fees to get you to switch. So in addition to trying it out for 15 days, you can have your switching fees covered. Which is a really nice gesture from T-Mobile and really shows that they are serious about their Home Internet.
How to try out T-Mobile 5G Home Internet
First, you’ll want to head over to T-Mobile’s website here and check availability. While T-Mobile 5G Home Internet is available in most areas, it is not available in all areas.
Check availability
If it is available in your area, a T-Mobile representative will reach out to help you through the sign up process. You’ll need to provide billing information, however if you do not decide to keep the service after your 15 day trial, you won’t be charged.
Set up your internet
Once your new router arrives from T-Mobile, it’s time to set it up. Which is super easy. Since there’s no wiring that needs to be done, it’s basically plug it in and it’s set up. The T-Mobile app will walk you through the process, however. You’ll also want to start with some speed tests, to make sure it is set up correctly. As an incorrect setup could cause you to lose out on some speed. Now that T-Mobile 5G Home Internet is set up, you’ll have 15 days from when you started the service to try it out and make sure it’s a good fit for you. We’d recommend spending that two weeks stress testing the connection. Lots of streaming, uploading and downloading, etc. Whatever you would normally do on your home internet. Speeds will fluctuate throughout the day, just as is the case with other ISPs.
Make a decision – keep it or return it
Finally, you’ll have to decide if you want to keep it or not. After roughly two weeks, you should have a good idea of how good (or not) the service is. So you can decide to keep it and start paying $50/month for it (or $30/month if you are a T-Mobile Magenta MAX customer). Or you can decide to return it, and you’ll get your payment back as a bill credit, but only if you’re within that 15 day trial. You can call T-Mobile’s sales support at 1-844-839-5057 to cancel. Just let them know that it’s not working out for you, and they’ll cancel the service, you’ll still need to return the router though.
