Before we get started, though, do note that this applies to group chats only. Another thing to note is that you won’t be able to encrypt an existing chat, you’ll need to make an entirely new group chat in order to do so. People that you add to that conversation will need to be on your friend’s list, if they’re not they won’t be available to be included in said group chat. That is basically it, let’s get started.

How to encrypt Facebook Messenger chats

The first thing you’ll need to do is open your Facebook Messenger app, of course. If it’s only our homescreen, launch it from there, if not, head over to your app drawer. Once you did that, you’ll need to create a new group chat. Tap on the pencil icon in the top-right corner.

On the next page, you’ll find the lock symbol in that same spot, the top-right corner. Tap it to enable encryption.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to tap the ‘Create a group chat’ option, following which you’ll see the available contacts below. Simply choose the ones you want to include in the conversations.

Once you’ve selected all contacts that you want, you’ll see the ‘Next’ button in the top-right corner.

The next screen will require you to name your new group chat.

After you figure out the name, tap the ‘Create’ button in the top-right corner.

There you have it, you’ve created your very first encrypted group chat. Everything that you write it in will be end-to-end encrypted.
