So, in this article, we’ll essentially show you how to use a different background for your Instagram Stories. Once again, this is more of a workaround than a direct feature, so have this in mind. We’ll explain things one step at a time, and we’ll also include a bunch of screenshots below, so that you can follow along.

How to change Instagram Story background color

First, open up your Instagram Android app. Let’s assume you’re logged in, if you are not, do it now. Once you’ve done that, swipe from left to right to open the Instagram camera.

Once you’re there, either tap ‘Post’ to use an existing image, or capture a new image. Let’s say you want to capture a new image and use that in your Instagram Story. Tap the shutter button once you’re ready.

When you’re done with taking the image, tap the three dots button in the top-right corner.

A pop-up menu will appear, and one of the options will be for you to save the image you’d like to publish. Do that.

Once you’ve saved the image, tap the three dots button again.

This time around choose the ‘Draw’ option.

You’ll see a bunch of solid colors at the bottom. You can browse through them by swiping right-to-left. The colors on the first page are based on the image you’ve taken. If you find a color you’d like to use as a background here, choose it, if not, swipe. We’ll swipe further, for the purpose of this tutorial.

We’ll choose the green color from the second page.

Once you’ve chosen the color you want, it will be highlighted inside the color picker tool in the bottom-left corner. All you have to do now is hold your finger on the display for a couple of seconds, and then release it.

Your display will be fully colored in the color you’ve chosen. Tap the checkmark icon in the top-right corner.

Once a new menu appears, tap the three dots button in the top-right corner… again.

Choose the ‘Save’ option.

Combine the two images you’ve saved

You have now saved both the image you’d like to use for your Instagram Story, and the image you’d like to use as a background for it. In order to combine the two, you’ll need to go back to the Instagram camera screen, and tap the little image in the bottom-left corner.

Then choose the image you’ve saved for the background.

On the next screen, tap the stickers icon at the top.

From there, find the add image icon, as shown below.

Now find the image you want to publish on your Instagram Story, the one you saved first.

That image will now appear on top of the background, and you’ll be able to arrange it any way you want. Once you’ve done that, tap the arrow icon in the bottom-right corner.

Now you can choose whether you’d like to publish your Instagram Story to everyone (general settings you chose), your Close friends, or via a Message. Once you decide, tap the ‘Share’ button.
