You can find matches for your pets with ancient art like Egyptian figurines, or even artwork from the renaissance period. Google says the Arts & Culture app can find matching images for pets, including dogs, cats, fish, birds, reptiles, horses, or rabbits. Users can access the new Pet Portraits feature from the rainbow camera tab inside the Arts & Culture app. Google says the feature is available on both Android and iOS versions of the app.

“When you take a photo in Pet Portraits, our trained computer vision algorithm recognizes where your pet is, crops the image and puts them where they belong: front and center. Once that is done, a machine learning algorithm matches your pet’s photo with over tens of thousands of artworks from our partners’ outstanding collections to find the ones that look most similar,” Google said in a blog post (via). Furthermore, users can share Pet Portraits as a still image or combine a few to create a GIF slideshow. You can also find additional information, such as the stories behind the artwork and descriptions of the artists. Some exciting collections like the ten coolest dogs or cats of art history are also available through the app. Google shared some examples of Pet Portraits, and it’s far from perfect. Regardless, it’s a fun tool to play with for kids or adults that have pets at home. Although you may not find the accurate twin of your pet, you will end up learning quite a bit about the artists and their love for animals. Last year, the Google Arts & Culture app was updated with AR selfie filters based on historical artwork. This allowed users to interact with the work of legendary artists including Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh, etc.
