In case you’re unfamiliar with Google Duo, here’s a refresher. Back in 2016, Google brought two new communication apps to the market. One was Google Allo, a messaging platform much like Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp. Also, Google unveiled a video chat app called Google Duo. The application, much like Apple’s FaceTime, would allow two people to communicate via video streams. About a year later, Google created Google Meet. This is also a video chat platform, but it’s more targeted at businesses and large-scale meetings. Both applications existed over the years, but this year, we got the news that Google was going to get rid of Duo and push Meet in its place.
Now, the transition between Duo and Meet is almost complete
We’ve been following the transition between Google Duo and Google Meet for a bit, and it’s entering the final stage. As spotted by 9To5Google, the Google Duo app icon will change to the Google Meet icon, and its name will also change to Google Meet. If you still have the Google Duo app on your device, then you should see the app icon change to Meet as well. Along with that, you should get a notification explaining the change if you’re confused. The notification will explain that you’ll still be able to make video calls, and you’ll also be able to set up meetings. However, if you want to set up meetings, then you’ll need to create or log in to a Google account. This change should be a good move for Google when it comes to organizing its departments. Why have a Duo team and a Meet team? The company most likely combined those teams into one.
