For the uninitiated, OOKLA is the company behind the popular internet speed testing service SpeedTest. It recently analyzed the 5G performance of several popular devices to determine the five fastest 5G smartphones in the US. The study found that Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro Max offers the fastest 5G speeds stateside. The device delivered a median 5G download speed of 177.21 Mbps and an upload speed of 19.28 Mbps during the test. The iPhone 14 Pro followed closely with median download and upload speeds of 175.08 Mbps and 18.59 Mbps, respectively. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 sits third on the list. The latest Samsung foldable offered a median download speed of 162.50 Mbps during OOKLA’s test. Its median upload speed was 15.17 Mbps. The other two devices on the list are also Samsung Galaxy smartphones. The Galaxy S21+ is in the fourth spot with median speeds of 140.06 Mbps and 14.77 Mbps, respectively. The Galaxy S22 Ultra (137.42 Mbps and 14.48 Mbps, respectively) is right behind it to complete the chart. This study from OOKLA combines 5G samples from all 5G providers in the US during Q3 2022. The precise 5G download and upload speeds will vary from network to network for each device. But the company points out that this analysis “provides a snapshot of what you might typically expect”.

5G speeds in Brazil and China are double over the US

Alongside the US, OOKLA also analyzed the 5G performance of popular smartphones in nine other countries. The company found 5G speeds in Brazil and China are double over the US. The Motorola Moto G 5G Plus had a median 5G download speed of 358.39 Mbps in Brazil. The OnePlus 9 topped the chart in China with a speed of 349.15 Mbps. Average 5G speeds in Japan, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, and Vietnam were also faster than in the US. A different device tops the chart in each of these countries, as well as in the UK and Germany. You can find OOKLA’s full report on the fastest 5G smartphones in these countries here.
