The Galaxy Z Fold 4 started picking up the October SMR (Security Maintenance Release) last week. Following the initial rollout in Asia, Samsung expanded the update to Europe, Africa, Latin America, and now, the US. Both carrier-locked and unlocked units are receiving the update stateside. The new firmware version is F936USQS1AVII and F936U1UES1AVII, respectively. The Galaxy Z Flip 4, meanwhile, is just starting to receive the October SMR. Samsung has so far released this month’s security patch for the latest clamshell foldable in its homeland South Korea and the US. The update for the Korean units comes with firmware version F721NKSU1AVJ5, while that for the carrier-locked units in the US is F721USQS1AVII. Unlocked Galaxy Z Flip 4 is yet to pick up the October SMR stateside. Samsung should roll out the October update to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 in more markets in the coming days. You may get some additional bug fixes and optimizations with this release, but don’t be hopeful for major new features or enhancements to existing features. Samsung is keeping everything for its Android 13-based One UI 5.0 update rolling out later this month. The latest update is only about security fixes. As mentioned earlier, the October SMR patches more than 50 privacy and security vulnerabilities on Galaxy devices. The majority of those were Android OS flaws and also affected Android products from other brands. Google patches those issues. But Samsung also got rid of some Galaxy-specific vulnerabilities with this release. The company calls those Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items. It patched 18 SVEs this month.

October update is also available to the Galaxy A21 in the US

Along with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, Samsung is also rolling out the October SMR to the Galaxy A21 in the US. The update is available for carrier-locked models with firmware version A215USQS8CVI7 or A215USQS8CVI6 depending on your carrier. If you’re using either of Samsung’s fourth-gen foldables or the Galaxy A21, the latest security update should be available to you anytime now if it hasn’t already. You can check for updates from the Settings app or wait for a notification prompting you to download and install the new software package. This may be the last security update for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 with Android 12. Samsung will begin rolling out Android 13 to its devices later this month. The latest foldable duo should get the new Android version in November.
