However, there seems to be something fishy going on here. Despite Samsung claiming faster charging speeds, the new Galaxy flagships don’t bring any practical upgrades to the charging times, GSMArena has found. The publication conducted a thorough charging test of the Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra to discover that the devices take almost as much time to charge with a 45W charger as a 25W charger. The devices were tested with three different chargers: a 45W Samsung charger with power delivery (PD) and programmable power supply (PPS), a 25W Samsung charger also with PD and PPS, and a 65W third-party charger with only PD. Based on the report, 30 minutes of charging with the 45W Samsung adapter could refill 64 percent of the battery juice on the Galaxy S22+, which features a 4,500mAh unit. The Galaxy S22 Ultra, which packs a larger 5,000mAh battery, reached 60 percent charge with that same charger. While those numbers aren’t too bad, wait until you know the numbers for the 25W charger. The two devices reached 62 percent and 61 percent charge respectively after 30 minutes with this adapter. Yes, the Galaxy S22 Ultra reached more charge level with the less-powerful brick. The 65W third-party charger could charge the Galaxy S22 Ultra to 65 percent in 30 minutes. But as the new report notes, all these numbers are “within the margin of error”. There’s no practical benefit to users in terms of charging time.
The story is the same when it comes to 0 to 100 percent charge
If you’re hoping that a 45W charger would offer more tangible benefits when charging from 0 to 100%, you’re in for another disappointment. There’s hardly any difference here as well. As said before, these differences are within the margin of error. The Galaxy S22 Ultra took 59 minutes to charge fully with the 45W Samsung charger. The Galaxy S22+ took two minutes more. The time taken to charge fully with the 25W brick comes in at one hour four minutes and one hour two minutes for the two devices respectively. With the 65W solution, the Galaxy S22 Ultra took one hour and two minutes to charge fully. Long story short, the 45W charging support on Samsung’s Galaxy S22+ and S22 Ultra is only there to make the spec sheet look nicer. There’s no real benefit of it to users. The devices still take as much time to charge fully as the company’s 2020 and 2021 flagships, all of which topped at 25W charging seed. If you already have a 45W Samsung charger lying in your drawer, fine. But if you don’t, no need to shell out extra bucks for one just for your brand-new Galaxy S22+ or S22 Ultra. A 25W brick will get the job done as efficiently. As far as Samsung is concerned, it had done something similar with the Galaxy Note 10+ back in 2019. The company claimed 45W charging speed on the device but didn’t tell that’s only with a charger that supports the PPS standard. Alas, it hasn’t learned from its past mistakes. Samsung had to recently come forward and clear the air around the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ display refresh rate mess after initially making some misleading claims. We will let you know if we hear from the company regarding the latest finding.
