As of this writing, the October SMR (Security Maintenance Release) for the Galaxy S20 series is rolling out in Europe. Both 4G LTE and 5G variants of the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra are receiving the update. The new firmware version for the two variants is G98FXXSFFVIB and G98BXXSFFVIB, respectively. First reported by SamMobile, this update is already available in much of Europe. A global rollout, including in the US, should be just around the corner. The Galaxy A52 is also initially receiving the October SMR in Europe. However, the rollout is limited to the 4G variant in Russia with firmware version A525FXXS4BVI3. Samsung should gradually cover other parts of Europe before expanding to global markets. The 5G model of the Galaxy A52 should also soo pick up the October security update. Note that this phone received the latest SMR with the Android 13-based One UI 5.0 beta in India. But users who aren’t enrolled in the beta program will have to wait longer.
This update only brings the October SMR to the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy A52
Neither the Galaxy S20 trio nor the Galaxy A52 is getting any new features or improvements with this release. Samsung is only seeding the vulnerability fixes that are part of the latest SMR. The company lists over 50 patches in its monthly security bulletin for October. Some of those patches concerned critical vulnerabilities compromising the device’s security. If you’re using a Galaxy S20 model or the Galaxy A52 in Europe, the October SMR should be available to you anytime now if it hasn’t already. You can check for it by navigating to the Software update menu in the Settings app and tapping on Download and install. If you don’t see any updates, wait a few days and check again. Your phone may also send a notification once the update is available. Users in other regions can also look forward to receiving the October security update soon. As mentioned earlier, Samsung is already beta-testing Android 13 for its devices. The company has opened beta programs for the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21, Galaxy S20, and Galaxy A52. It is expected to release the Android 13 stable update later this month.
