Those who own a Fitbit Sense 2 or a Fitbit Versa 4, the company’s latest smartwatches, can now use Google Wallet as their preferred method for contactless payments. Prior to this rollout, it was only possible to use Fitbit Pay on both devices. Though it’s no surprise that Google Wallet is finally here. Google completed its Fitbit acquisition back in 2021. So Google Wallet on Fitbit devices was only a matter of time. Fitbit confirmed November 15 that Google Wallet and Google Maps will be available on both devices. Though not at the same time.
Google Wallet is available on Fitbit Sense 2 and Versa today
You can use Google Wallet starting today if you have either of the two new smartwatches. Google Maps however is “coming soon” the company says. It doesn’t give a time frame for app’s availability but hopefully it doesn’t take as long as it took Google and Samsung to launch Google Assistant for the Galaxy Watch 4 series. When the app does arrive, it won’t natively work on the watch without some help. You’ll still need to open Maps on your connected phone first. Then set your turn-by-turn directions. Those directions will then automatically populate on your watch. All of that said, users should be aware that the Google Wallet availability appears to be a gradual rollout. Fitbit doesn’t mention a time frame here either but it does state that the app will start rolling out today. Which suggests that it may be a few days or longer before it becomes available to all users. Fitbit also mentions that whether or not you can use it depends on if you bank supports the service or not. Some don’t, though many do now. In addition to the app arriving on Sense 2 and Versa 4, Google Wallet is also expanding to 12 new countries today. This includes Armenia, Cyprus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Slovenia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
