Facebook is removing fields from your personal profile
However, Facebook told TechCrunch that it’s going to be removing certain fields from personal profiles. A Meta spokesperson said that it’s doing this “as part of our efforts to make Facebook easier to navigate and use.” The items it’s removing from personal profiles are pretty personal and, admittedly, pretty controversial to some people. According to the quote from the Meta spokesperson, the company is removing four fields from personal profiles. Facebook is getting rid of religious views, sexual preferences, political views, and addresses. Getting rid of the address feature makes the most sense. Having your address openly available to the public means that anyone can find you. The other three fields all pertain to sensitive topics. A person’s political views, sexual orientation, or religious views can lead to unwanted arguments and harassment if discovered by the wrong people. The quote said that Facebook is removing these profile fields to make Facebook easier to navigate, but we can all guess that this may not be the case. It seems likely that Facebook is looking to make it harder for people to discover certain controversial views that others may have. This is especially true for the political field, as tensions have run high due to the election. At this point, we’re not quite sure how Facebook users will respond to this. However, we will just have to see how this pans out. Facebook says that this change will happen on December 1st, and people have the ability to download their profile information before that happens.
