Bohn has released his final notes on The Verge website, saying he is joining Google to “work on the Platforms & Ecosystems team.” The exact role is still unknown. “I am excited to help shape the future of software platforms like Android and Chrome — and continue to work at the nexus of technology and culture, just in a different way,” Bohn said in his farewell message. Hiroshi Lockheimer is the head of Google’s SVP platforms and ecosystems, including Android, Chrome, Chrome OS & Play, Comms, Photos. The team now has Dieter Bohn as a new member, hoping to expand Google’s operating systems and consumer products. Bohn has been a part of The Verge editorial team since the website’s launch in 2011. While being a part of The Verge editorial team, Bohn covered Android and the mobile landscape and also reviewed every Google product. Now, he is leaving the publication to join Google and follow his passion in a new way.
Bohn receives a warm welcome from Google executives
Since the news broke, some Google executives, including hardware SVP Rick Osterloh and Workspace VP Javier Soltero, have welcomed Bohn, saying they are happy to have Bohn in the team. Bohn has previously interviewed both in The Verge. “We founded The Verge with some grand ideas about how to do technology journalism differently. We started with the thesis that technology — especially consumer technology — creates culture. It seemed like a very big idea at the time, but it has turned out to be bigger than even we could have imagined.” Bohn said. A few days ago, Google also reported about hiring a former Spotify executive Paul Smith to work on YouTube Music. Smith has been Spotify’s Global Head of International Licensing since February 2017. Now, he’s expected expand YouTube Music in Asia-Pacific (APAC).
