[ORIGINAL ARTICLE] One of the biggest features in Material You is Dynamic color. This feature takes the primary colors in your wallpaper and creates a custom theme based on them. A new bug, as reported by a user on the Google Issue Tracker, has been discovered. This Dynamic Color bug causes all of the games open on the phone to spontaneously crash or restart.

This bug seems to be on the beta

According to the report, this was something that’s been in Android 12 for a while. It was first reported back in July, and there doesn’t seem to be a fix out just yet. When the user changed this wallpaper (and thus, the theme), all of their games that were open were immediately closed. The conversation has been ongoing since then with the latest update being posted on November 3rd. This issue was first experienced on a developer preview, but it appears to persist to today. Adam Conway from XDA Developers tested this out by playing an assortment of games, and all of them crashed when the theme changed. Regardless, it’s still unclear if other people experiencing this are using the final version of the software or the beta. There are people who are still running the Android 12 beta.

Folks found the cause for the Dynamic Color bug

According to multiple sources including XDA Developers and Commonsware, this problem is related to a configuration change in the software. When a device changes something like the theme or screen orientation, it’s called a configuration change. Apps aren’t programmed to respond to these types of changes, but a new update released by Google seems to have messed that up. At the current time, it only appears to affect games. The games mentioned to crash are Genshin Impact, Wild Rift, Pokemon Go, Minecraft, PUBG Mobile, and CoD Mobile. Typical apps don’t seem to be affected by this. If it happened to all apps, then this Dynamic Color bug would have gained much more notoriety. For the time being, even though the people were able to find the cause, no one was able to find a solution. It looks like this will be a pretty hard issue to get around. The best thing we can do at this point is hope that Google catches wind and fixes this. If not, it could mean a bad reputation for what is a well-received version of Android. If you’re still waiting to get your update, it’s still rolling out users. This process will be taking place over the next couple of weeks, so it should be coming soon.
