Since laptop components tend to have a high carbon footprint, Concept Luna will utilize a 75% smaller motherboard at just 5,580 square millimeters. Moreover, Dell claims this concept will have 20% fewer components onboard. According to the manufacturer, these changes will reduce the carbon footprint of the motherboard by up to 50% (via). In addition to size reductions for key components, Luna will also see the motherboard going inside the lid. This allows the motherboard to remain cool as it has a larger surface area surrounding it. This, in turn, reduces power consumption while also increasing the component’s lifespan.
Concept Luna uses 10x fewer screws than a conventional laptop
Repairability is another crucial facet of Dell’s Concept Luna. The company claims that almost everything inside the laptop can be easily repaired or replaced. This is thanks to a 10x reduction in screws. Dell claims this brings down repair time by up to 1.5 hours. Critical components like the battery, display, and even the keyboard are fairly easy to remove. Dell will showcase Concept Luna in further detail at CES 2022, which begins on January 5, 2022. In the meantime, the company has shared some images of Concept Luna in action. The manufacturer claims that the carbon footprint of a product could dip by as much as 50% if the aforementioned guidelines are followed. This comes amid corporations and nations laying out plans to reach net-zero emissions over the next decade and beyond. Chipmaker Qualcomm said last month that it would bring a 50% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The company said it would reach net-zero by 2040. Meanwhile, Verizon has pledged to reach net-zero by 2035. Similarly, Google did its bit by announcing a few sustainability-related measures across its apps and services in October. An update to Google Maps introduced a feature that displays fuel-efficient routes for every trip. The company teamed up with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for this cause.
