The streaming device offers only 8GB of storage. This may sound okay-ish for TV devices, but you do not get the entire 8GB of storage for your disposal. There are certain hardware limitations attached to the Chromecast with Google TV. While there is no proper solution for the low storage and other limitations, Google Support now offers a basic how-to guide related to it. The how to guide will give users some tips on how they can free up the storage on Chromecast with Google TV if they ever run out of storage. Notably, there is a dedicated section on the Chromecast Help page with the title “Free up storage on Chromecast with Google TV”. Interestingly, as noted by 9to5Google, this how to guide seems to have been introduced in late October. The guide doesn’t mention the reason behind running out of storage. Here, you need to use a bit of your common sense.

Google offers a straightforward three-step guide to get more out of your storage

The most common reason for running out of storage would be attempting to update installed apps or downloading a new one. It requires you to get rid of the old apps that you don’t use, uninstall them and actively manage to free up your storage. The good thing, Google is offering a straightforward three-step guide to get more out of the 8GB storage space. Sadly, it includes common tips, which users might have already been doing. As mentioned, 8GB of internal storage is sufficient for a TV device, but a good chunk of that storage is already consumed by Android operating system. Out of the three tips the guide offers is to “clear app cache”. This would remove the “temporary data”. To do that, simply navigate to Profile icon > Settings > System > Storage > Internal shared storage > Cached data. Finally, hit the OK button. Next one is to “uninstall apps that you don’t use”. For this, go to Settings > Apps > See all apps > Uninstall and hit the OK button. Last suggestion is to “expand your Chromecast’s storage”. This step requires you to buy a USB-C hub and attach an additional storage device. There is a list of products that Google is recommending to look out for. More details on it can be found here.
