This game is definitely targeting Instagram. We’re all familiar with Instagram’s innate appeal (most people will just call it fake). But hey, it’s a photo-sharing platform, so you can expect a ton of people to play model and post their heavily photoshopped pictures.
But, BeReal is the app to break that convention
BeReal is an app developed by a company of the same name, and it goes out of its way to be the antithesis of Instagram and all that it stands for. The point of the game is to post unfiltered, unedited, and un-photoshopped images to your friends pretty much at a moment’s notice. So, how does this game work? Well, after you add people to your circle, you’ll all get one notification every day. When you get that notification, you’ll need to open the app and take a picture of what you’re doing at that moment. The app will take a picture with both the front-facing camera and the rear camera. Once you get the notification, you’ll have only two minutes to take the photo and share it. From that point, you’ll be able to comment on the photos that your friends took. However, if you take longer than the allotted two minutes, the app will rat you out. It’ll probably just post your name in the chat so that your friends can poke fun at you.
How to get the app
The BeReal app is available to download from the Google Play Store and from the Apple App Store. It’s free to download, and there are no in-app purchases or ads according to the listing. It seems like a fun game to play, but as always, it’s best to pay close attention to what you’re taking pictures of. The spontaneous nature of the app can possibly lead you to take pictures of things you don’t want on the internet.
